You must be ready to burn yourself in your own flame;
How could you become new if you haven’t first become ashes?
Friedrich Nietzsche

There is neither happiness nor unhappiness in this world; there is only the comparison of one state with another. Only a man who has felt ultimate despair is capable of feeling ultimate bliss. It is necessary to have wished for death in order to know how good it is to live.

“Perhaps everything terrible is in its deepest being something helpless that wants help from us. So do not be frightened if a sadness rises up before you larger than any you have ever seen; if a restiveness, like light cloud-shadows, passes over your hands and over all you do. You must think that something is happening with you, that life has not forgotten you, that it holds you in its hand; it will not let you fall. Why do you want to shut out of your life any agitation, any pain, any melancholy, since you really do not know what these states are working upon you? Why do you want to persecute yourself with the question whence all this may be coming and whither it is bound? If there is anything morbid in your processes, just remember that sickness is the means by which an organism frees itself of foreign matter … for that is its progress. You are the doctor too, who has to watch over himself.”

This monster, the body, this miracle, its pain, will soon make us taper into mysticism or rise, with rapid beats of the wings, into the raptures of transcendentalism.

The deeper that sorrow carves into your being the more joy you can contain.

Within the spiritual journey, you understand that suffering becomes something that has been given to you to show you where your mind is still stuck. It’s a vehicle to help you go to work. That’s why it’s called grace.

When by the flood of your tears the inner and outer have fused into one, you will find Her whom you sought with such anguish, nearer than the nearest, the very breath of life, the very core of every heart.

Suffering has been stronger than all other teaching, and has taught me to understand what your heart used to be. I have been bent and broken, but - I hope - into a better shape.

True freedom and the end of suffering is living in such a way as if you had completely chosen whatever you feel or experience at this moment. This inner alignment with Now is the end of suffering. Is suffering really necessary? Yes and no. If you had not suffered as you have, there would be no depth to you as a human being, no humility, no compassion. Suffering cracks open the shell of ego, and then comes a point when it has served its purpose. Suffering is necessary until you realize it is unnecessary.

The reasons humans eat animals fall under taste, convenience, and preference. All three of which are selfish, all three cause great suffering, great suffering to the environment, and great suffering to yourself.
Gary Smith

Nothing that we despise in the other man is entirely absent from ourselves. We must learn to regard people less in the light of what they do or don’t do, and more in light of what they suffer.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls. The most massive characters are seared with scars.
